Remember when “talking about the weather” was

Remember when “talking about the weather” was considered superficial small talk? (By people who lived in cities and had no worries about the corn in the field about to lie down under hail….) These days I think weather may be the only story. We are living under extremes of drought and flood and fire and wind, and plans can change in an instant give or take the strength of a roof or the de-icing solution on the wings of a plane. Last night I was unsuccessful in turning the sky outside the studio blue and the storm made wild sounds of lightning and cracking and sliding things. This morning I have to put on my boots and go saw a tree that fell in the path.

I have two more days to get the weather to cooperate with my plans. Art is shamanism, even if one is not skilled enough yet to make a difference in the world. So I consider the umbers and tell myself if I mix the color of warm stones I will feel them underfoot.

Yesterday I dropped a favorite drawing off at @petermillerbooks for the December show The Architecture of Drawing. For those of you who follow my pencil work, this is a chance to see it in person (and consider a purchase, at a very reasonable price!). This might be the most perfect drawing I’ve ever done, and I had to live with it for a year before being willing to let it go. Sometimes I call myself a recovering perfectionist, but let’s be honest, I may never recover. ✏️Every drawing is a second chance at………✨

I am excited to be in the company of some of the city’s best drawers and thinkers and builders. Opening December 8th in the Peter Miller Gallery. BTW this is THE place to hang out for a day and find a gift for everyone on your list. Sublime selection of pens, notebooks and book-books about homes and architectures and cities. People take the ferry from Bainbridge just to go to Pioneer Square and visit the store, and Peter is always a ready guide for the book to help you envision your dreams.

Also, if you are wondering what this drawing is, it is called a Dolphin— one of the towering structures that keep a ferry on its path to harbor as it docks. Pencil on Moleskine.
